A bill opposed by the State Sheriff’s Association is expected to be heard on the Senate floor tomorrow.

Senate Bill 296 would allow people without a permit to carry a concealed weapon during a declared State of Emergency and not face criminal charges.

The Florida Sheriff’s Association says the bill is too vague and would be difficult to enforce.

FSA is calling on the bill sponsor, Senator Brandes of St. Petersburg to add amendments clarifying the legislation.

“Does that mean that you are allowed to carry a concealed fire arm and drive into an area of the state where there is no emergency? And once you get to that area how long can you carry that weapon? Is it a five day period? Is it a 30 day period?” said Steve Casey, Executive Director, FSA.

“It simply says while you’re in the process of evacuating. So whenever you get to your final destination then you can no longer carry for these purposes,” said Sen. Brandes.

State law currently allows the transportation of a concealed weapon without a permit.
