TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Motorists in Florida will get a break in the fees they pay to renew their car registration, although many won’t see the benefit until next year.

The Florida Senate on Tuesday unanimously approved a bill (SB 156) that would lower auto tag and registration fees by about $25 a year for many motorists.

The fees were raised back in 2009 as legislators grappled with ways to balance the state budget while dealing with the Great Recession.

But the fee cut will not kick in until September. Many motorists would not get the break until 2015.

The bills that are advancing would cost nearly $400 million.

Gov. Rick Scott has made the auto fee rollback a top priority for the legislative session.
