News Release: Florida Senate

TALLAHASSEE—Today Senator Dwight Bullard (D-Miami) renewed his call on Governor Rick Scott to pardon Marissa Alexander and U.S. Airman Michael Giles. Both Floridians were convicted for firing warning shots to escape their attackers. No one was injured in either incident.

“We have two critical cases in our judicial system that deserve attention,” Senator Bullard stated. “The idea that if your life is threatened and you defend yourself, the laws on the books won’t protect you is absolutely absurd.”

Currently, the state attorney’s office in Florida is looking to charge Ms. Alexander for three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for a possible 60 year sentence. Senator Bullard is asking the state attorney’s office for an explanation of the 60 year sentence. Airman Giles remains in prison.

This morning Senator Bullard sent a letter to Governor Rick Scott’s office asking for a review and response to the cases of Michael Giles and Marissa Alexander. Governor Scott’s office has not responded to the Senator’s initial request regarding Michael Giles’ case since September of 2013.

Marissa Alexander’s conviction was overturned in September last year when a Florida judge ordered a retrial, citing jury instructions had been erroneous in her first trial.  Senator Bullard asked Governor Scott’s office to pardon Alexander on the grounds that she fired a warning shot at an abusive husband.
