Red Cross Blood Shortage

The Red Cross of South Georgia needs your help and your blood.

Last week’s winter storm caused about 600 Red Cross blood drives to be canceled, including two in Valdosta.

“I was going to donate blood last week at the blood drive at Moody Air Force Base. They shut down the whole base, so the blood drive was canceled,” said Victoria Mertz, Blood Donor.

“We really want to encourage people to come out, donate, help us make up for what we may not have been able to collect last week. Help us to get on track for where we need to be and and have a good supply right now, heading into spring time,” said Claire Bowen, Donor Recruitment Rep.

Spring is right around the corner, and spring can also bring tornadoes. The Red Cross says if they do not collect a surplus of blood now, they may not have enough in case of a severe weather emergency.

Many people avoid giving blood because they’re worried it would hurt, but Bowen says it’s virtually painless, it only takes about an hour, and you get free cookies.

According to The Red Cross, one donation could save multiple lives, especially if you have a rare blood type.

“We do encourage people that are O-negative or O-positive to come in. Also, those with the negative blood types: A-negative or B-negative we encourage them to come in because their donations could go to help more people,” said Bowen.
