News Release: Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office

Wakulla, Fla. — Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested a 45-year-old Tallahassee man Wednesday, Jan. 15 on felony narcotics charges following a traffic stop in the eastern section of the county, according to Sheriff Charlie Creel. The arrest netted law enforcement nearly two kilograms of cocaine and slightly less than $125,000 in cash.

The suspect was arrested and charged with possession of cocaine and trafficking in more than 400 grams and less than 150 kilograms. WCSO investigators discovered 1,913 grams or nearly two kilograms of cocaine hidden inside the vehicle along with $124,900 in cash hidden inside the vehicle and an additional $2,400 in cash on the suspect. The WCSO is withholding the name of the suspect due to the ongoing investigation.

Sgt. Jeremy Johnston was patrolling along the Woodville Highway corridor at 12:54 p.m. when he observed a vehicle traveling northbound on the highway. Sgt. Johnston observed Weston crossing the northbound lane lines on three occasions and with southbound traffic coming toward the motorist he conducted the traffic stop. The suspect told the deputy he had been eating inside the vehicle. Sgt. Johnston initiated his emergency lights near T.W. Wood Road but the suspect failed to stop for another mile. The suspect did not have a valid driver license and also had outstanding warrants out of Leon County for violation of probation. During the arrest process the deputy smelled the odor of burnt marijuana inside the vehicle.

The suspect gave Sgt. Johnston and Detective Derek Lawhon consent to search his Chevrolet truck and deputies discovered the cocaine and cash loaded inside vacuum packed bags that were hidden inside the vehicle compartments. The estimated street value of the cocaine is $153,040.

The WCSO Narcotics Unit, Undersheriff Trey Morrison, Lt. Jimmy Sessor and Captain Chris Savary joined the investigation and uncovered the rest of the narcotics which tested positive as cocaine while locating the U.S. currency. The vehicle was seized and taken to the WCSO impound yard and the bags of cocaine were weighed while the cash was counted.

The suspect was transported to the Wakulla County Jail where he was booked on the felony charges and held in the WCSO Jail under a $45,000 bond. He posted bond on Thursday, Jan. 16 and was released. The investigation continues.
