CAPE CORAL, Fla. (AP) — A Florida congressman who pleaded guilty to cocaine-possession charges last year is returning to Congress.

Republican Rep. Trey Radel says he’s looking forward to representing his southwest Florida constituents in Washington again after taking a leave of absence and undergoing treatment in a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center.

In November, Radel pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of cocaine possession and was sentenced to a year of probation. He admitted to purchasing 3.5 grams of cocaine from an undercover officer in Washington on Oct. 29.

The House Ethics Committee is investigating his conduct.

The 37-year-old freshman has resisted calls from several GOP leaders, including Gov. Rick Scott, to resign. Last month, Radel pledged to regain the trust of his constituents by redoubling his legislative efforts in the capital.

MIAMI (AP) — Congressman Trey Radel of Florida said he will not resign despite pleading guilty to cocaine possession charges.

The freshman Republican made the announcement in his Cape Coral office Thursday, shortly after leaving a rehabilitation center and a month after entering his plea.

He told a news conference that alcohol was the root of his problem and he vowed to remain sober.

On Nov. 20, Radel pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of cocaine possession and was sentenced to a year of probation. He admitted to purchasing 3.5 grams of cocaine from an undercover officer in Washington’s Dupont Circle neighborhood on Oct. 29.

The 37-year-old Radel defied Gov. Rick Scott and several GOP leaders who have called his resignation.

Radel is a former TV news anchor and had been in office for 10 months when he was charged. His district includes the Gulf Coast cities of Fort Myers and Naples.
