Tallahassee, FL -  Thousands of families in the Big Bend will get gifts come Christmas morning because of the generosity of others.

As Santa Claus gets his sacks of toys ready, Tallahassee resident Demetrius Hover now has a sack of toys to take home to his two young daughters for Christmas morning.  It’s all thanks to the ‘Toys for Tots’ campaign.

Hover says, “Makes me feel great, makes me feel happy to be able to give them something for the holidays.  It’s a good thing they’re giving out toys and stuff, helping the community.”

The ‘Toys for Tots’ coordinator, Rodney McCoy, says they’ve given donated toys to more than 1,100 families.

He says because it’s so close to Christmas, donations are still accepted, but will be saved for next year.

McCoy says, “It really touches our heart to see the community do what they’ve done this year.  We’ve had an abundance of giving; an abundance of toys.”

The Salvation Army says it’s broken its record by helping more than 1,500 kids receive clothes, shoes, and bikes for Christmas this year.

Dianna Shepeard was able to get gifts for her 16-year-old son at Monday’s distribution on Jackson Bluff Road.  She says, “By me being disabled, my son, I wasn’t able to give to my son.  Their helping me means the world to me.”

Shepeard was so grateful that she hugged members who were passing out the items.  She says, “I want to tell them thank you and God bless them.”

Goodwill Industries say if you donate to them, you’ll not only get an end-of-year tax benefit, you’ll also allow community members to do last minute shopping at its stores at lower prices.

The charitable organizations say it’s not too late to give.
