Tallahassee Police Holding Internal Investigation Over Burglary Pursuit

Police holding internal investigation over burglary pursuit

The Tallahassee Democrat

The Tallahassee Police Department is holding an internal investigation over whether officers carried out department policies and procedures during a burglary investigation that led to a police officer being shot at outside of city limits.

Police Chief Dennis Jones issued a statement saying he initiated the investigation Feb. 11. The state attorney took the case to a grand jury over the issue of mutual aid and whether the officer was working outside of the city limits, said Jones.

TPD officers were gathering info on a burglary within the city limits near 2824 Misty Garden Circle when one of the officers heard a noise coming from that residence. The officer then got in his police car and drove to the location when gunshots began being fired.

The Leon County Sheriff’s Office conducted the investigation and charges were filed for attempted homicide of the police officer. A grand jury has approved second degree murder charges against the suspects, according to Jones.

Jones said his department will interview the more than 25 TPD officers and Leon County Sheriff’s Office employees connected to the incident.
