Coming Sunday: The Shelter in crisis
Allegations of harassment, mistreatment by Shelter…: Allegations of harassment and mistreatment by some Shelter staff are common, homeless say. Although staffers and board members say major incidents have not been reported to them. Many homeless say they’ve remained silent for fear of being kicked out.

On Sunday, Democrat reporter TaMaryn Waters has a story on The Shelter and fallout from allegations last month that staff mistreated homeless clients.
She speaks to board members, homeless people who use The Shelter and its services and those who choose not to do so, as well as Executive Director Mel Eby, on paid administrative leave for two weeks.
An internal board investigation and a police investigation are ongoing. The Shelter has responded to United Way officials who demanded answers about procedures and policies after the allegations came out.
And Eby, the only director The Shelter has had in its 25 years, is eager to get back to work, insistent that he is the best person to lead the program.
