Florida Governor Rick Scott appointed a panel to look over Florida’s gun laws including Stand Your Ground back in April of 2012. The task force released their final recommendations Friday.

The 45-page report ultimately recommended to keep the law. In it’s core findings, the panel stated “All persons who are conducting themselves in a lawful manner have a fundamental right ot stand their ground and defend themselves from attack with proportionate force in ever place they have a lawful right to be.”

Former NRA president Marion Hammer supported the panel’s recommendations.

“Overwhelmingly the conclusion is the law is working fine. It doesn’t need to be repealed or undone and it’s a good law,” said Hammer, who is now a NRA lobbyist.

But it doesn’t sit well with everyone. Tallahassee activist group “The Dream Defenders” lobbied for youth representation on the Governor’s panel. They say that George Zimmerman’s stand your ground defense following the murder of teenager Trayvon Martin is an example of the negative impact the law has on minority youth.

“I’m very much disappointed but it’s not surprising, it’s up to students, it’s up to youth, to organize and demand that this law is repealed because it’s definitley a detriment to black and brown youth all over the state,” said group member Michael Sampson.

The report did recommend some tweaks. They would like to see legislators review standards for neighborhood watch groups, including telling volunteers not to pursue potential suspects.

Commentary:

The Tallahassee O is Glad That Governor Rick Scott Doesn’t Care About What A Crooked And Dumb State Attorney Like Willie Meggs Has To Say!  The Task Force Clearly Stands By The Law As A Good Law For Law-Abiding Citizens To Protect Themselves.  We certainly don’t care what Meggs thinks as he shouldn’t even be a State Attorney.  Meggs is the type of person that protects thugs on the streets and not our law-abiding citizens.  He also could be the most crooked and dumbest state attorney ever!

These Are The Dumb Comments That Were Made By Crooked State Attorney Willie Meggs That Protects Criminals And Repeatedly Fails To Prosecute Them With Bogus Charges On Innocent Citizens:

The consequences of the law have been devastating around the state,” Tallahassee State Attorney Willie Meggs told The New York Times earlier this year. “It is almost insane what we are having to deal with.

“Gangsters are using this law to have gunfights,” state’s attorney Willie Meggs told the Times.

“Basically this law has put us in the posture that our citizens can go out into the streets and have a gun fight and the dead person is buried and the survivor of the gun fight is immune from prosecution,” says Florida State Attorney, Willie Meggs.  Second Circuit State Attorney Willie Meggs says he will ask the governor and legislature to repeal Florida’s Stand Your Ground law. He says it gives the green light for gunfights in the streets.

“It’s crazy. It’s insanity,” said Willie Meggs, the state attorney in Tallahassee who has encountered the defense several times in recent years. “Stand your ground is the dumbest law ever put on the books.”
