Dear Friend of the First Amendment Foundation:
As 2012 ends, please consider making a donation to the First Amendment Foundation at https://www.floridafaf.org/give-now so that we can continue working to ensure that Florida government remains in the sunshine and accountable to its citizens.
Your tax-deductible donation helps support the Foundation’s programs and services, and makes our work on behalf of all Floridians possible.
Our more notable successes this past year include:
•Working with Governor Scott’s staff to ensure the recovery and release of over 50,000 transition teams emails thought to have been “lost” shortly after the Governor took office. We supported legislation, signed into law, extending the Public Records Law and Sunshine Law to explicitly cover newly elected officials in the months before they take office.
•Opposing legislation allowing agencies to enter into contracts privatizing agency programs without providing information to the public until after the contract was executed. The bill did not pass. We also helped successfully defeat a bill granting legislators and staff an absolute privilege against compelled testimony related to legislative actions or the compelled production of any document or record related to such actions.
•Convincing the FAMU Board of Trustees to keep its anti-hazing committee working in the sunshine.
•Intervening on behalf of a citizen asked to pay $3,500 in response to a public record request. As a result of FAF’s action, the citizen was able to obtain a copy of the requested record for 15 cents.
•Hosting eight sunshine seminars around Florida, as well as a Sunshine Litigation Seminar at USF/Tampa. FAF also conducted a dozen open government training sessions for various government entities and citizen and professional organizations.
In the upcoming year, FAF will be announcing a host of new initiatives and ambitious programs, all designed to keep Florida government in the sunshine. We’re currently working on creation of a legal fellowship position to assist the FAF in its watchdog work, and have received a grant to allow development of a Smartphone mobile app that will provide quick and easy access to basic information about Florida’s open government laws. We’re expanding our public outreach through increased use of social media, including creation of a FLfoi channel on YouTube. And we’re improving our open government training through regularly scheduled webinars, as well as hot topic webinars that will allow us to respond quickly to breaking news and related access issues.
Your support of the First Amendment Foundation is critical to our continued effectiveness and success as Florida’s “first responder” on open government.
We need your help. So please, take a moment and show your support of our good work through a tax-deductible contribution to the First Amendment Foundation. Making a donation to the FAF is easier than ever – you can make a pledge or a one-time donation online with a credit card at https://www.floridafaf.org/give-now or simply send a check to: First Amendment Foundation, 336 East College Avenue, Suite 101, Tallahassee, FL 32301.
Wishing you and yours happy holidays and a wonderful, sunny new year.
