Florida Supreme Court
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - An outspoken Palm Beach County judge is in hot water with the Florida Judicial Qualifications Commission over his comments from the bench, in written orders and public appearances.
The panel filed formal judicial ethics charges against County Judge Barry M. Cohen with the Florida Supreme Court on Wednesday.
Cohen is accused of bias due to his criticism of state laws, prosecutors and law enforcement officials. That includes his suggestions minorities are disproportionally arrested and jailed for drug trafficking and law enforcement may be motivated by the race or status of suspects.
The judge’s lawyers issued a statement saying he’s preformed his duties ethically and honorably. The attorneys say he will vigorously defend himself against allegations they linked to political attacks they say threaten the judiciary’s independence.
