I thank you for the opportunity to allow me to put forth the reasons why I should be the choice of the voters in the Second Judicial Circuit election.
I agree with the Democrat’s analogy that “one could look at the two-woman race for a judge’s seat in the Second Judicial Circuit as a judicial-retention vote.” I suggest that, given the tenor of Judge Josefina Tamayo’s campaign, this is a judicial race in which a no vote for retention is merited.
The insertion of the endorsement of Republican Attorney General Pam Bondi into this campaign, while not unlawful, does violence to the concept of a nonpartisan campaign. Further, it raises serious questions about the fairness of any future hearings that are argued by the attorney general in this circuit.
Judge Tamayo has run a campaign that comes very close to, if not crossing the line of, violating the integrity of judicial campaigning. Using an unauthorized picture of me and not properly displaying the disclaimer that the Tallahassee Bar Association’s poll results are the opinion of a small percentage of its members shows a lack of fairness and integrity in her judicial campaign.
I will not go there. I will not campaign on who Judge Tamayo is not but, rather, who Barbara Hobbs is. My sense of fair play and respect for the integrity of the judiciary demands this. Fairness and integrity matter.
Yes, experience matters as well. I am the only candidate in this race who is an experienced trial attorney, having tried well over 200 jury trials in state and federal courts. I am the only candidate in this race who has practiced in every county courthouse in the Second Judicial Circuit. I am the only candidate in this race who is a small-business owner and has worked 15 years in the public sector and 15 years in private practice. Finally, I am the only candidate in this race who was born and raised in the Second Judicial Circuit and is intimately familiar with the people of the Second Judicial Circuit.
In the primary, voters of this circuit had an opportunity to vote for a judge of their choice. Forty-nine percent (49.1) of you chose me. I am thankful to you for this and respectfully ask for your continued support on Nov. 6. Experience, fairness and integrity matter.
Barbara Hobbs is a candidate for judge in the Second Judicial Circuit.
