TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL)– Residents say they are taking matters into their own hands. They’ve formed a buddy system, they’re going out out in pairs, and only traveling during the day time.
Wayne Hendley says when gunshots rang out early this morning, he had no idea of what was going on.
“It does not happen not this close to my community, i’m kind of scared, i felt kind of bad, this to close to my home you know.”
He lives in the Gibb Mabry Village Apartments, less than a block from where police found a white impala with apparent fire damage and pierced with bullet holes.
Like Hendley, other residents say crime surrounds this area.
“I mean i’ve seen the neighborhood over the last few years get worse and worse,” says Terry Paiano.
Paiano says he’s been living in the area for 15 years now. He says he hasn’t moved because like everyone else living in the apartments, he’s disabled.
“We want to move but we’re kind of just basically stuck you know because of our disabilities.”
Paiano says there’s been a series of break-ins and people have gotten mugged in the area. Paiano and his neighbors travel in pairs and only go out during the day.
“I get confused because its like alot of people that don’t even live here, they come in here and do stuff, its like we don’t know where they come from, they just come in out of the blue.”
He says he prays that the neighborhood gets better. Paiano says like many of his neighbors, he is hoping for change.
You know i’ve been trying to get change here for years, because you know the apartments aren’t bad its just a bad area.”
